The
Ishinryu grading syllabus is split into 8 grades called " kyu’s "
beginning with the 8th kyu which is the red belt up to the 1st kyu which is
a brown belt. From the 1st kyu you can progress onto the 1st Dan black belt
after which you may progress to 2nd Dan etc.
To
progress through the belts you have to pass an exam called " a grading
".
There
are two types of gradings, which are " club
" and " general ".
A
" club " grading as the name implies
is a grading held at the club at which you normally train on a regular basis.
The club gradings are from 8th kyu red belt, up to and including 5th kyu green
belt.
A
" general " grading is the held at the
Barking Hombu where you will be graded by instructors from clubs other than
your own. General gradings are from 4th kyu upwards.
For
the kyu grades there are three levels of passes. These are referred to as 1st,
2nd and 3rd classes.
Gradings
are held every 3 months for kyu grades ( club and general ) and as long as you
attained a 1st or 2nd class on your last grading, you may grade again after
3 months. If you attained a 3rd class then you will have to wait 6 months before
you can grade again.
Black
belt Dan gradings are every six months, held in June on the summer course and
in December just prior to Christmas.
The
Ishinryu syllabus highlights the basic content of each grading but higher kyu
gradings may include additional material.
Any
given grading is divided up into sections. These include stances, punches and
strikes, blocks, kicks, combinations and kata.
